Dr Mei Lee is a dentist who combines a rich scientific foundation and a deep-rooted dedication to patient care. She draws inspiration from her family’s medical background, with both parents working as nurses and her sister in medicine. Her uncle, a devoted dental technician, encouraged her to explore dentistry. She completed her Bachelor of Dentistry at the University of Western Australia in 1996, leading to a decades-long career that focuses on compassionate, holistic care.

A highly skilled general dentist, Dr Mei handles a broad spectrum of cases, from emergency appointments to reconstructive work. “I do a range of treatments in the practice daily,” she explains, from basic maintenance and preventative care to more comprehensive treatments like full-mouth reconstructions. Her practice is built on listening closely to patients’ concerns, and she tailors her care to fit both their needs and dental health goals.

In addition to general care, Dr Mei has a special interest in cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry. “I enjoy changing smiles,” she says, noting that these procedures often bring a renewed sense of confidence to patients.

Her patients range from school-age kids to their parents to their grandparents. "I live locally in the area. So I personally know a lot of the people I treat, such as my kids' friends," she says. Dr Mei also has loyal patients who drive hours to reach her clinic. She values referrals and says, “There’s nothing more rewarding than knowing people trust me enough to recommend my care.”

Education and Continuous Upskilling

Dr Mei's foundational education began with her Bachelor of Dentistry from the University of Western Australia, where she graduated in 1996. Throughout her career, she has actively pursued continuous learning and invested in dental education courses and conferences to keep up with the latest advancements.

Recently, she attended the World Dental Congress hosted by the Australian Dental Association, giving her a chance to have a closer look at new techniques and technologies in the field. “Dentists are required to attend a minimum of 60 hours of continuing education every three years, but we definitely do more than that,” she adds.

A Philosophy of Attentive, Individualised Care

Dr Mei's approach is personalised and holistic. She sees dental health as integral to overall well-being. She often says, “A healthy mouth is key to a healthy body,” emphasising the undeniable link between oral and systemic health. Her goal is to help patients move from emergency visits to proactive care until they reach a point where they're visiting for “just simple maintenance” to keep their smiles in top shape.

She is particularly attentive to patients with dental anxiety. “I’m pretty good at just sitting and listening,” she says, understanding that many anxious patients need a caring ear and a pace that works for them. Her methods are calm and gentle. With a strong focus on painless dentistry, she takes a step-by-step approach that helps patients feel more comfortable over time.

“I try to provide the best treatment as if I would be treating my family,” she says. This perspective guides her commitment to attentive, individualised care.

Beyond Oral Health

Dr Mei's emphasis on a holistic approach considers the bigger picture beyond oral health. “Sometimes, it’s about more than the tooth itself; it might be about the grinding, their diet, or systemic issues,” she explains. She evaluates each patient with a comprehensive lens, so she can look at other potential causes and collaborate with other healthcare providers when needed.

Her early work in Aboriginal communities continues to influence her practice today. As part of a government outreach program, she travelled to isolated regions to provide critical dental care to underserved populations. "It's an experience I'll never forget," she says.

She handled procedures like extractions and wisdom teeth removal, often in conditions that required adaptability and quick problem-solving. This time taught her the importance of accessible care and shaped her commitment to making dentistry a welcoming experience for everyone.

Life Outside The Clinic

When she’s not at the clinic, Dr Mei enjoys a life centred around loved ones and reenergising activities. With two teenagers, family time often means packing up their camper trailer and exploring Australia’s vast landscapes during school breaks.

An avid tennis player, Dr Mei describes tennis as a personal passion that keeps her active and engaged outside of work.

With her patient-first approach, empathy, and dedication to continuous professional development, Dr Mei is able to create an environment where patients feel genuinely cared for and encouraged to take a positive step toward a healthy smile and a healthier life.
